Some of the greatest fishing in the world, is available within a mile or two away any where in the US! Many anglers miss out because their gear is too big and not sensitive enough to show them bites. catches! Most anglers in the US have never truly fished ultra light. Years ago I
changed my gear and I caught sacks full of fish all summer and for the first time in
my fishing career, caught fish into very late fall! I never knew that fish would feed in
late November and early December on open water!

I will give you two examples of having a blast catching fish vs. casting at them.

At a 4th of July picnic on a small pond in suburban Chicago, I was fishing with my
30 foot pole while a pack of kids nearby were busy throwing a bass jig connected
to a 2.5 inch bobber (way too big) at a weed bed extending 4 ft. out into the lake
from the edge. Their problem was simple. They couldnt cast well with the short
kids rod and closed face reels. Their giant bobber was not giving them any
indication of bites and the bass jig was too big to fit in any of the nearby fishs
mouths. Their 10 lb. line was like a cable being seen by even the aggressive fish in
the area approaching this rig (read- avoiding). When the rig was actually wet,
because these kids could not get the thing into the water near the fish because of
tangles and weeds on the jig head, it was not catching fish. Their casts couldnt
get the lure/giant bobber combo past the 6-foot wide weedy edge.

I fixed that problem by putting down my pole and setting up my shortest 7 ft.
graphite telescopic pole with a delicate float (the size of an pencil eraser) with 1.5
lb. line leader attached to a siz #14 hook and baited it with a tiny grub. I handed the
pole to the first kid and she caught a chubby blue gill within 5 seconds. With this
non-mechanized fishing pole there was nothing to getting the bait just 6 feet out,
past the weed bed. The kids could easily put the bait in front of the fish. As for the
fish, they could easily pull under the tiny natural bait with the small hook and the
float, which was about 1/30th the size of the bobber. The sensitive rig picked up on
the fish sucking in the tiny bait immediately so the kids could react.

Sure, I had to stop fishing for a while, but I had a blast with this pack of 6 kids. My
newly adopted friends were out-fishing the guys with spinning gear working around
the pond 40:1 !

The reason most kids dont catch is those short little kids rods. Kids rods come
with the Mouse on the box, wrapped in plastic as one unit and are way too short.
The closed face reels are not bad, but the short rods require a giant 55-gallon drum

On another day that summer, with nothing more than the cane pole, I won the 1st
day of the U.S. Open with a top weight of 19.75 lb. of blue gill caught in 4 hours.
The answer to this victory was the simplicity of my rig and the size of my line using
a tiny hook. By using this cane pole (really composed of graphite) I was able to fish
quickly for blue gill that were in front of me. The conditions that day had them
feeding in past the first break of the shoreline and were only 8 inches of water. My
rig allowed me to get the bait out to the fish easily, accurately and quickly. Most of
the other anglers in the match were fishing much farther out. My neighbor had a 60
foot pole!!! He was 58 feet past the fish with his expensive gear and I crushed his
weight by 83% using little more than what Huck Finn used -- a cane pole. Some
competitors were even casting far out into the lake some 70 yards away. On this
day, AS MOST DAYS IN OUR LOCAL LAKES, the plentiful smaller fish caught in great
number, will offer you success as an angler.

I would brag even more about that U.S. Open, but my teacher Hall of Fame Angler-
Mick Thill, came from behind and crushed me in day 2 to win the tournament
overall, I finished 2nd.

Here are details on setting up to fish for most every fish in your local ponds. Follow
these (8) steps and you will have a pan fish blast of your own.

1. Consult local bait store owner.

They will give you great information on local ponds and you should be able to buy
some floats, and the rest of your gear below. While not every store owner is great
for information, most can get you to good fishing spots. To start,find waters with
panfish. Panfish are abundant and for the most part active. This will provide you
with a chance to catch fish.

2. Throw out your bobbers and purchase a couple small floats.

Bobbers are no good. Red and white are the worst. Throw them out or save them as
museum pieces. America is about to find out what the rest of the world has known
for 2,000 years. Floats catch fish. Even if you must cast larger float, a properly
balanced float will crush a round bobber every day. Slip bobbers are not as good as
floats either. This is because the line comes out the top in a slip float and catches
wind, current messing up the presentation.

3. Get some good fishing line

6 lb. test is overkill for pond fishing. Use 4 lb. with an even lighter 4 - 6 leader line
to the hook. If a fish feels the line, they are gone. If the fish sees the line, they are
gone. Your leader should be 2 lb.!
Fish feed by sucking their feed in with water. If the line is heavy, it gets sucked in
slower. Most of the time, heavy line is just spit back out. Fish can spit a poor
presentation out faster than you can see your float move up on the surface! With
heavy line, you can miss hundreds of fish bites each time out!! In the World
Championships- I fished with line that is 1/8th the thickness of U.S. 2 lb. line!

4. Get some small, SMALL hooks

Size #12 should be one of the biggest hooks you ever use! If the majority of you
checked your tackle box, I am sure that some 90% of you dont own a hook this
small! A big hook will kill your fishing! Kill it. Take a look at the nail on your pinky
finger. That is about as long as your hook should be or smaller. (Ask your bait store
owner or check out mickthill for these hooks) MOST MAJOR CHAINS DO NOT
CARRY THESE HOOKS. Some arent interested in you catching fish, just buying stuff.
They are quite happy selling a bunch of giant bass hooks, because that is what you
have been buying!!! As we ask for proper equipment, the stores will change and
offer us great selection. You may find these hooks in fly fishing sections of big
stores but you can ask your local dealer to special order them. Size #14 or #16
hooks are perfect. If you are wondering, I have landed a 9 lb. walleye on a size #14
hook with small leech.

5. Get some small bait

Again, the thumbnail on your pinky finger is probably the biggest bait you should
use. There are times the fish only want 1 maggot (spikes) on a tiny #16 hook. Even
the big gills will not take 2 or 3 spikes as readily as they would 1 tiny piece of bait,
this is especially true in early Spring, late Fall and after cold rains. Same would go
for worms. Sometimes using a tiny cut piece will give you success. Only the fish will
tell you. Lastly- big fish eat small bait! I have caught 15 lb. fish on a piece of crawler
the size of my small fingernail.

6. Get a cane pole or telescopic pole

I have landed a 3.5 lb. fish so far on the cane pole with 2 lb. line. We call them
whips and some call them crappie poles. I plan on landing bigger fish than that,
but the greatest number of fish are best caught in our local ponds using a whip and
tiny delicate floats with small baits. The whip will deliver the bait out to the exact
spot you need to lower your bait. This could be a drop-off, rock edge, gravel edge
or weed edge. You can hit the exact spot every time! No missed casts. No birds
nests. Once you find the fish, you can put the bait back in with the whip in the spot
where the fish are. Whips vary in length from 6 ft. to 25 feet (longer if you find pro
versions).

7. Balance Your Setup

Good shot is essential to this setup. The bite indicator (float you use) should be the
smallest you can find. Take your line, rig this float up and then using a bucket of
water to add split shot below the rig until your float is nearly sunk. It should be 95%
below the water if you have the right amount of shot on it. 75% of that shot goes
right under the float. Take a few small shot and this will go close to the hook. The
best shot is Anchor brand split shot! This is premium splitshot that will stay on the
line better and not slide around on you. It also tangles much less than the brand
with the wings on it- round shot is best.
Correctly balance your tiny float on thin line with a small hook and you will have
created a very efficient fish-catching machine! When your bait is on the hook, float
in the water- the bait should sink the float a little. When the rig is properly balanced
with bait on it- the slightest movement will show above water for you to see. If you
have too much float tip sticking up- you will not see the bites!

8. Catch (and release) bags full of fish

You will need a keep net for the water if you want to have some fun. Seeing how
many you can catch is all the fun. There is nothing like Gourmet Chocolate a bag with 100 fish

competition, the net is also required to keep the fish you catch for weight of your
total catch. Keeping some medium sized fish and returning the largest fish is the

bigger! It is essential that you release large fish to keep the bloodlines breeding and
ensure future fishing on your lake!

9. Teach a kid to fish and take them fishing

With a cane pole and the basics, kids can have a blast! If we dont take our kids
fishing, and above all, show them a good time, our sport will fade. Improving our
sport brings better fishing programs, cleaner local waters and education on
preserving our environment for kids. We need kids to care about their local world
and taking them fishing for bluegills is the absolute best way to show them a good
time. Incidentally, there is nothing wrong with catfish, golden roach shiners,
bullheads, carp or bass as any fish gives the kids just as much fun. Any fish they
catch will be a blast on a whip.

Who knows, you might even get hooked on pole fishing. I did.

As an angler, is our time best spent casting all day, or catching fish? Certain
situations will require spinning gear, a very long rod and casting, but for the
greatest number of situations in our local ponds and lakes the reel-less pole will

It's a rare day indeed that I get a CD from an artist that I can truthfully say does not have a bad track in the bunch. I'm more than happy to announce thats exactly what I must say about that one. There simply is NOT a bad one in the bunch. No fillers here at all, with every song standing tall on it's own.

Venusian Summer has a nicely varied, mix of 6 tracks that are very well written tunes by that clearly superb artist. With many of the tunes displaying a lot of the kind emotion that makes for a really great listen. Clearly drawing from what I can only imagine are him own personal experiences. At different points touching on the most real emotions like love, and the pain of failed relationships can certainly be heard.

While most people think of organizational culture in broad, sociological terms, the cultural model developed by the Breckenridge Institute indicates that patterns of interaction between small-groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s are some of the fundamental building blocks of organizational culture. Most managers know that effectively leading a work-group takes an enormous amount of time and energy because they have to maintain a balance between conflicting or competing interests in a complex system of coalitions of small-groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s who see themselves, others, and the world very differently. But what many managers don't know is that the tapestry of these patterns of interaction that gets woven over time becomes the fabric of organizational culture in their work-group. In that article we argue that managers have two choices. They can either allow the culture in their work-groups to emerge naturally through autopilot patterns of interactions which sentence them to struggle against overly complex systems and human interactions, or they can consciously create, reinforce, and maintain an effective work-group culture that will help them achieve their goals and key performance indicators.

Patterns of Interaction

What exactly are patterns of interaction? Patterns of interaction are habitual behaviors, emotional responses, actions, and interactions that occur between people in the workplace. They often occur on autopilot and are based on the personalities of the managers and staff members involved and the tacit assumptions and unquestioned beliefs of organizational culture, e.g. "how it's done around Abba songs While patterns of interaction can assume myriad forms, Paul Watzlawick has identified two key examples that have special application to the day-to-day realities of organizational life: a) symmetric versus complementary and b) content versus relationship (see Paul Watzlawick, Pragmatics of Human Communication, W.W. Symmetric versus Complementary: Watzlawick argues that every relationship must be consciously or unconsciously defined (negotiated) by the participants as being either symmetric or complementary. In symmetric interactions, people tend to mirror each other's behavior and emotional responses. Symmetric interactions are based on an assumption of equality that has been tacitly agreed to by the participants that tries to minimize the differences between the participants. In complementary interactions, one person's behavior and emotional responses complements (is different than) the other's behaviors and emotional responses. Complementary interactions are based on an assumption of difference that has been tacitly agreed to by the participants that tries to maximize the differences between the participants. Differences can include being assertive-submissive, superior-inferior, primary-secondary, or as Watzlawick refers to them, being one-up or one-down.

So while Watzlawick's two examples describe mechanisms that are fundamental to all human communication, it is important to note that patterns of interaction can (and do) develop around any topic or activity: Who talks most in meetings, how decisions are made, whether decisions actually get implemented, the chemistry of people in work-group meetings, how a group members see and respond to their manager (symmetric versus complementary), or how top management communicates important business issues to their staff (content versus relationship). There are as many patterns of interactions as there are groups of people who interact.

When patterns of interactions happen repetitively, over time they solidify and become tacit assumptions and unquestioned beliefs about other people and the relationships we have with them. If patterns of interaction are typified by collaboration, teamwork, common purpose and identity, achieving group goals, and positive affirmation of team members, they solidify and create a group-chemistry and climate of positive energy, increased productivity, and high-performance. If the patterns of interaction are typified by destructive conflict, interactions can become spring-loaded with negative energy as group members feel like they have to "walk on egg shells" around each other. Not surprisingly, the relationships that emerge from destructive interactions are toxic so the group-chemistry and climate in these work-groups becomes unhealthy to all involved. If a work-group is more or less successful at achieving its goals and objectives, their patterns of interaction (constructive or destructive) go on autopilot, slip below the surface of organizational consciousness, and become part of culture in that work-group, e.g. "how it's done around here."

The complexity of these interactions increases exponentially when moving from small-groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s to groups of 20 or more people because the amount of information processing needed to keep track of the patterns of interactions becomes enormous. For example, in a group of 20 people, a manager has to keep track of nineteen relationships between them and others, plus 171 third-party relationships. The dynamics of these third-party relationships change again when they combine into coalitions of 3s and 4s that may have conflicting or competing interests. In a department of 50 people, a manager has to keep track of 49 relationships between them and others, 1,176 third-party relationships, plus myriad coalitions of 3s and 4s that may have conflicting or competing interests. In fact, Robin Dunbar has correlated the size of the neocortex with group size and claims that the ideal limit for the I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day of relationships a person can effectively manage is about 150 (Robin Dunbar, Grooming, Gossip, and the Evolution of Language, Farber and Farber, 1996, p. 69 ff). The computational power of the human brain begins to overload when the number of interactions gets too large so as the quantity of interactions goes up, the quality and depth goes down because the human brain only has so much processing power.

The Role of the Manager

A powerful force for creating patterns of interaction in work-groups is the personality and management philosophy of the manager who leads the group. Many approaches to managing conflict in work-groups tend to view all members of a work-group as "equal," but the influence of the work-group manager must be more heavily weighted because they possess formally delegated authority and are accountable for the Gourmet Cheese performance. Support for that view comes from neurophysiologic research on the human brain that has identified a specific part of the human brain (amygdala) that produces and senses emotions and functions like an open-loop system, e.g. our emotional connections to other people (like our boss) create shared moods and emotional responses for the entire group. Like an invisible wireless network, work-group members send and receive most of their communication through body language (55%) and tone of voice (38%). Daniel Goleman argues that employees take their emotional cues from the top - everyone watches the boss. Even when a manager is not highly visible their attitudes affect the moods and emotions of direct reports and that ripples down through the organizational levels like a domino effect creating an emotional climate throughout the organization (Daniel Goleman, Primal Leadership, Harvard Business School Press, 2002, p. 3 ff). Over time, a manager's ability to resonate the emotions and moods of their employees creates either a constructive or destructive pattern of interaction within a work-group.

For example, Matilda is a sales manager in a medical equipment company. Some days she's your "buddy" and wants to chat over coffee, and other days she's a "high-chair tyrant" who pounds on the table in meetings and demoralizes her direct reports with criticism and contempt. "What mood is she in today," whispers Jack as he gets to the office? "She's been flip-flopping since I got here," Jill responds also in a hushed tone, "one minute she's asking me how my weekend was and the next minute she's hammering me about my sales targets." "Yea," Jack laughs, "you can look at her face when she walks through the door in the morning, and tell what kind of day you're going to have." In any group of humans, the person in the leadership position has enormous power to create either constructive or destructive patterns of interaction, so managers like Matilda are like emotional guides for Jack, Jill, and the other people who report to them. When Matilda transmits destructive emotional messages, Jack and Jill begin to resonate on that frequency. When she sends constructive emotional messages, they resonate on that frequency. Over time, a pattern of interaction emerges and solidifies that is largely on autopilot where work-group members are drawn into a destructive cycle of conflict and rehash the same issues over and over again and don't know why. When a manager understands how powerfully they resonate their employees and they use that fact to influence them positively and maintain a constructive atmosphere, the climate in the work-group will almost always be positive, with much higher levels of work productivity and efficiency.

In addition to resonating the emotions and moods of group members, the leader's way of "seeing" their direct reports and the organization's structures, systems, and business issues powerfully scripts group members about how they should relate to each other and the larger organization. More specifically, the purpose of culture (any culture) is to teach people how to see the world. All organizations have active but informal teaching processes by which culture is promulgated to new employees through more "seasoned" managers and staff members who act out and articulate the edicts and demands of the culture. For example, the formally stated policy of a company might be to always serve customers' needs regardless of how demanding they are, but the specific cultural norm and pattern of interaction taught by one manager (Jeff) is to avoid conflict with customers at all costs. So a customer (Curt) walks into a store and a new sales person (Sarah) and her manager (Jeff) are standing at the register checking an order. Jeff comments quietly about Curt, "He always gives us a hard time," so they ignore him, trying to avoid conflict. Curt reads that emotional message in their behavior and actually feels ignored. After a few minutes of just standing around, Curt snaps critically, "Hey, young lady! I need some help over here!" Sarah looks at Jeff and thinks to herself,

Our knowledge and beliefs about the day-to-day activities of organizational life are powerfully shaped by how we are taught to see ourselves in relation to customers, top managers, other departments, and other business associates. Howard Gardner claims that leaders have the ability to "manage meaning" for others by promoting ways to interpret situations, and then suggesting acceptable ways for people to react to these situations (Howard Gardner, Leading Minds, Basic Books, 1995, p. 39 ff.). Because managers cannot help but influence their direct reports through their emotional responses to day-to-day activities and by the way they interpret the meaning of organizational activities, they are irrevocably the creators and transmitters of organizational culture, regardless of their level of awareness in doing so. Managers have two choices. The first choice is to allow the culture in their work-groups to emerge naturally through the autopilot patterns of interactions described above. that sentences them to struggle against an Invisible Bureaucracy of overly complex structures, systems, and human interactions that often frustrate and undermine effective performance. The second choice is to consciously create, reinforce, and maintain the elements of an effective work-group culture that gets managers the desired results of achieving their goals and key performance indicators.

The Interaction Equation

A more concrete way to understand the complex patterns of interactions in work-groups of 20 or more people would be to video-tape a series of staff meetings and then analyze them. During a one hour meeting there are a finite number of interactions that could occur. If a large enough sample of video-taped meetings were analyzed over time, patterns of interaction between small-groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s could be identified that would reveal important information about the formal and informal power structure in the work-group and the degree to which conflict between group members is either constructive or destructive. The Breckenridge Institute has identified five kinds of actions and interactions that should be identified from the video-taped meetings and these function like five terms in an Interaction Equation.

The number of interactions and who initiated them

How many were characterized by constructive, versus destructive conflict

How many decisions were made based on these interactions

The number of interactions that were actually implemented

The degree of impact that implemented decisions had on either maintaining or reconfiguring the day-to-day operational reality of the work-group

The number of interactions and how forcefully people advocate for their positions and press for solutions and decisions can then be correlated with factors such as the personality types of the manager and staff, their level of delegated authority, their degree of self-interest, their length of tenure, the breadth of experience they have had working in the organization, and other key factors. These patterns of interaction are almost always on autopilot and based on the tacit assumptions and unquestioned beliefs of the work-group's or larger organization's culture. The results of that type of analysis often indicate which work-group members or small-groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s are actually leading and managing the work-group, regardless of their position on the organization chart. Understanding how that culture-building mechanism works enables managers to disrupt ineffective patterns of interactions, take them off autopilot, reconfigure them, and then migrate them back to autopilot operations that produce the desired results using repetition and by rewarding the desired behaviors.

At a higher (organization-wide) level the Interaction Equation can also be used to characterize patterns of interaction between work-groups (departments, divisions, teams, etc) that have specific organizational functions and these in turn become key elements of an organization's overall corporate culture. For example, patterns of interaction that emerge within a specific work-group are powerfully shaped by the factors mentioned above (personality type, length of service, etc) plus the disciplinary paradigm (body of knowledge) and functional responsibilities within which a given work-group operates. If group members are part of a fairly homogeneous disciplinary paradigm (engineering, sales, IT, accounting, marketing, etc), then group members will tend to have similar education, training, experience, work-related tools, membership in professional organizations, disciplinary indoctrination, and technical standards. For example, group members in an accounting department will tend to see themselves and others through the lens of that disciplinary function. In addition to the work-group chemistry and climate mentioned above, the larger the overlap between people within a given work-group around a disciplinary paradigm, the more identified group members will tend to feel with each other, and the more they will have a sense of "shared meaning" and a "shared reality."

So it is not unusual for two work-groups (Sales, Production, IT, etc.) to experience destructive conflict over how they see and carry-out their functional roles, especially if the small-groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s that lead and manage these work-groups are not aligned around a higher-level corporate purpose, direction, core values, and an company-wide set of goals and key performance indicators. As Deming points out, the structures, systems, and goals of the larger organization often cause functional units to unintentionally optimize their own performance and sub-optimize the performance of other work-groups or the entire organization (W. Edwards Deming, Out of Crisis, MIT Center for Advanced Engineering Study, 1986, p. 62 ff). When inter-organizational patterns of interaction happen repetitively over time and the company and work-groups are more or less successful despite their misalignment, a company-wide pattern of interaction emerges between the work-groups, goes on autopilot, slips below the surface of organizational consciousness, and becomes a key element of the company's corporate culture, e.g. "how it's done around here." As mentioned above, while most people think of organizational culture in broad, sociological terms, the day-to-day realities of organizational life clearly show that the fundamental building blocks of organizational culture are the patterns of interaction and interdependent networks that form between small-groups of 2s, 3s, and 4s that cross the organizational boundaries of work-groups.

Bottom Line: Patterns of interaction at the small-group or company-wide level can be your best friend or your worst enemy. They can work for you when work-group members collaborate, handle conflict constructively, and are aligned with a company-wide purpose, direction, values, and goals. Or they can create self-defeating cycles that cause the managers and staff members that compose work-groups to spiral into the same destructive conflicts over and over again without knowing why. So managers are left with two (and only two) choices. They can allow the culture in their work-groups to emerge naturally through autopilot patterns of interactions which sentences them to struggle against an Invisible Bureaucracy of overly complex systems and human interactions, or they can consciously choose to create, reinforce, and maintain the elements of an effective work-group culture that will help them achieve their goals and key performance indicators.

In fact, if any one of those three elements is removed the fire extinguishes. This is called the fire triangle and all happy fires have these same characteristics.

People act the exact same way as nature, after all we are part of nature. Love has been compared to a raging fire by many experts. If love is, indeed, a raging fire then it is logical that the same rules would apply. This is where the love triangle Outer Limits alive. The love triangle works exactly the same way. There are three fundamental characteristics required to sustain a happy and healthy relationship. First and foremost is a mutual belief in God as the creator. In this regard it is widely accepted that successful team must collectively demonstrate critical relation building skills in order to create high level of investment value. It has also been widely recognized that while many teams among the small and mid-size companies were certainly well qualified and well equipped with technology, they were well behind the learning curve in understanding the basics of their client investment besides they were perceived to be working in a vacuum concerned only with accomplishing technical tasks and not seeing the big picture. Therefore these groups are found to be not well integrated into the broad investment processes.

The solution to this dilemma falls with those who gets involved in the strategic investment decisions or plays a critical role as part of operational responsibilities. These leaders need to better their own knowledge of what drives success during transition times, what ultimately drives the investment forward and learn to manage wide-ranging people so that technical, investment and personal goals align. There is a need for a different type of leadership competencies during transition and massive expansion phase which may be entirely different from the leadership competencies required during start-up, turnaround, or redeployment phase in an organizational life-cycle. Office Supply Super Stores

Staples and Office Depot have become synonymous with the category moniker of office supply store as neither recognizes the intrinsic value of the shopper and has infused that understanding into their brand. Think about this brand, for just a moment. I doubt if they have any locations closer than an hour and a half drive from each other and yet their ever-expanding client base makes pilgrimages to journey there.

IKEA was once the place were yuppies shopped because they wanted top design but could not always afford it. It has morphed into a feast for your senses that engages even those that can afford much more. It is an experience and that experience enriches our own sense of ourselves.

This is a pretty new and exciting phenomenon, and it's seeing young women making a massive impact on the workplace. The desire to succeed and deliver is one to be applauded, but only if it means something to the individual who's putting the hard graft in. Time and time again I've worked with women who have achieved great things but who don't feel it. International Sales Negotiation Tips For American Women

As a North American International Sales & Marketing professional in Europe for over 20 years I have a fair bit of negotiation experience between North Americans and Europeans. As I was often the most multilingual person in the office I was often called in desperation when my colleagues thought all communications had be permanently severed with their clients.

There is one essential thing I picked up: if you are well prepared you will be able to Land of the Lost the cross-cultural negotiation challenges that inevitably pop up.

So, before any cross-cultural meeting don't skip the essential preparation. Set aside enough time to sit down, think about the person you will be meeting and clearly identify:

What does your client want?
What do you want to sell him?
What cards can you play?

What are you prepared to negotiate?
What win-win outcome possibilities do you see?

After that it is all in your mindset. The right attitude will reap dividends. It is hard to describe but it is easy to recognize people who do have the international mindset. So here is my short definition of the intrinsic element to an international mindset:

Quiet unassuming confidence.

The key to succeed in international negotiations is having a quiet confidence of your own capabilities. Assume your position without infringing of the boundaries of the others. But do it with quiet confidence.

Knowing you have done all of your homework will help you be confident. Doing your homework will also make it easier to immediately identify any cross-cultural communication difficulties. You will be able to ask questions to clarify the agenda and get the ball moving again in the direction you want. The smoother your communication the easier it is to appear professional. The more professional you appear the more credibility you have.

Here are a few more tips I picked up along the way for other North American - European negotiations:

Dress

Industry operating environments can change dramatically from country to country. In one country navy suits for men will be the norm and the same industry in another country will be more tolerant. This was the case when I worked in television in London. As a woman I had it easy, but I did wear a blue suit during all out of the office negotiations when I hadn't previously met my client.

Perfume

Here in France I have gotten used to wearing more perfume than my North American counterparts. I am careful of adapting these habits when travelling to North America. I just would not be able to carry out a good negotiation if I were to wear perfume as I do in France. Smell just seems to be Reviewsjioyaatw people notice in others they do not know well.

Smiles

Being North American I smile a lot more than most Europeans. Smiling can be taken as being threatening, or over-provocative, yes, even here in Europe, without going further east. This is something I did not change very often. I smile as I would normally do in North America. But I might change this if I were to have different responsibilities. Too many acquaintances come up to me here in France asking me not to smile, or why I'm smiling.

Cheek Kisses

Smiling leads into the habit of greeting everyone with kisses on the cheeks. I would much rather shake hands or just smile rather than having to stick out my cheek for greetings to everyone I meet. There is an art to it which I will not go into here. The number of kisses depends on the region you are in, the age of the people, and other factors the locals don't seem to agree on anyways. But remember that it is a practice that is assimilated to simply saying hello. If you come across someone you would normally say hello to in a country where cheek kisses are the norm, it means no more than saying hello. But if you don't give yourself in to the practice some people can be offended that you did not say "hello".

Using Your Cultural Advantages

Being North American living in France and speaking French, I have often gotten away with addressing all of my colleagues as "tu" instead of the more formal "vous". But I would never do this by force. And I always call people by the given name they were introduced to me with. Americans have the habit of calling others nick names. This can Voodoo for you or against you. You will have to adapt. Personally, being a woman, I find it easier to avoid.

Adapting To Different Cultural Practices

There are two examples that immediately come to mind because they are the two things I don't like.

In France eating and drinking seem to be an obligatory part of every negotiation. Having a glass of wine at lunch when you know you have a full afternoons work to do afterwards is always challenging. There are times when it is possible to avoid drinking. However there are also times when it is well advised to have that glass of wine to fit in with the key players.

The second example is the dress code for North American women to wear stockings with skirts at all times of the year even during a heat wave. The offices are often air-conditioned so it is easy to deal with a jacket, but stockings are an oddity.

Men & Women In Negotiations

Be aware that a male/female sales team works differently in different cultures. On occasion I will hear of a well-dressed woman being invited into a cross-cultural negotiation meeting without any clear role in the negotiation process. Each time has led to the other (male) party asking for the woman to leave the room. I have never personally been in one of those meetings.

Team Play

This has been a source of great fun and success for me. Multicultural sales teams who are aware of the different way they are perceived in a given culture have the opportunity of using and playing on a very wide range of natural skills. This works extremely well if you work together outside of the negotiation.

Cultural misunderstandings do happen. Sometimes more than we would like. The good news is that the more practice you have the easier it gets to develop good cross-cultural communication skills. The rewards are both personally enriching.

The Crape Myrtle Tree - How To Prune This Wonderful Ornamental

The Crape Myrtle, Lagerstroemia indica, is one of the most ideal choices for Stonehenge tree in a small garden, backyard or patio. It is also fairly modest in its water needs and so is particularly suitable for dry and Mediterranean gardens. It has an attractive form, delicate leaf texture and as a deciduous plant, looks good when out of leaf, not least due cereal boxes its reddish pealing bark.

It is usually chosen however because of its amazing flower display in the summer months; Crape Myrtle blooms being one of the highlights of the gardening calendar. While being impressed by flower display alone is normally a bad reason for choosing a particular tree species, in the case of Lagerstroemia, by virtue of its small size and non-aggressive roots, an exception can be made. In fact the flower color is so significant that uniquely perhaps among trees, it determines the pruning method to be adopted.

Pruning to shape trees almost always involves removing whole branches at The Goodies base, rather than shortening them, as with shrubs and bushes. This is so in order to maintain the natural shape and flow of the tree. Conversely, the branches of flowering shrubs like roses are shortened, to induce better and more prolific flowering. It follows therefore, that while we may be interested in enhancing the floral effect of the Crape Myrtle by means of pruning branches short, care must be taken not to ruin the form of the tree in the process. In this way, a balance is struck between flower production on the one hand and the general health of the tree on the other.

*Lagerstroemia indica tends to sprout new shoots from its base but it's not necessary to religiously remove each one. On the contrary, as the trunks are relatively thin in diameter, Crape Myrtle actually looks better grown as a multi-stemmed tree. Furthermore, as persistent pruning tends to weaken branches in the long run, younger stems can be earmarked to replace older ones which over the years have lost their vitality.

Recent developments in America suggest that learning and development could be resurrected from the dark, dusty recesses of human resources into a bright new future.

Ever since 1994 and the merger between the Institute of Training and Development and the Institute of Personnel Management to form what in 2000 became the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, there has been no argument about which area was the dominant one. Factors concerning the development of employee skills seemingly became secondary to the rising importance of Human Resource Management.

I was recently provided a glaring example of this by an acquaintance in a senior learning and development role at one of the largest organisations in the UK. In my mind this is the correct focus and ensures that the organisation is focused on continuous improvement rather than fighting fires.

Although the UK has yet to put in place many CLO's (currently five in the FTSE 100), there is little doubt that we are likely to follow suit. After all, it was the US that brought HRM to us all those years ago!

So what is the difference and why is it important? There is a clear difference between managing and leading, and the effect it has on an organization is dramatic.

Virtually anyone who reads and studies this article will be able to tell what kind of organization they are dealing with after a very short time. You will also know how to deal with that organization more effectively.

The first thing to look for is organizational growth. Managed organizations tend to grow quickly and then plateau. Organizations with strong leadership grow more slowly, but keep on growing.

So the goals of the organization can be a good indicator as to whether it is managed or led.

I am working with an organization right now that is having very fast growth. They are hiring managers in several states to run their rapidly growing facilities. They don't have time to train their managers, so they hire Spiritgoddess666 with the skills they need today.

My client is hiring people to run their various offices - managers. Managers assure that the day-to-day operations are carried out.

I am not downplaying the importance of management; every organization must have managers to function. So every organization will have people performing a management role. This does not mean that every organization will have effective leadership, however.

I see this most clearly in sales management. Sales managers, for the most part, over see the day to day operations of a sale department, establish sales goals, and work with Marketing to co-ordinate activities. Rarely, if ever, do sales managers focus on developing people. I don't consider an annual sales Vh1pwyrutfg class as a people development program.

And this is where the real difference comes in. Leadership, not management, is required if an organization is going to experience sustained, long-term growth.

One of the most important actions that a leader takes is to hire people based predominantly on character traits. That is, leaders hire people who possess the character traits that underscore the values of the organization and help it grow over the long run. They know and understand the rule, "Hire by character traits. You can teach skills."

This obviously takes longer, so would not be practical for my fast-growing client. However, the downside to their situation is that they are not developing the next generation of managers, or more importantly, developing leaders. They have hired for skill-sets only, with little concern for character traits. They will soon hit a wall to growth and not know how to get over it unless they start creating and grooming leaders.

One other problem organizations face when hiring by skill-set alone is interpersonal conflict. When you don't take character traits into consideration you can find that you may have people who can manage but don't necessarily fit in. The single biggest reason people leave companies is due to interpersonal problems. This is an expensive situation many companies seem to face continuously.

Now, let's look at what my client will be doing to solve this dilemma.

The most important thing they did was to recognize that they need to develop a team from within the organization to avoid many of the problems they could face in the future.

They now understand the difference between management and leadership, and want to focus on leadership. However, they still are hiring managers due to the rapid growth.

This company is lucky in that they have a core group of senior managers who are good potential leaders. They just need to be trained, and that is relatively easy.

The first thing I did was to get the team together and explain that they will now have a dual role - management of resources and operations, and leadership of people.

Leaders develop people, set the standards of performance, and focus on achieving the long term goals of the organization.

The next thing we did was select potential leaders within the organization in whom they will begin the grooming process.

As you can see, this requires planning and time - not something that an organization focused solely on management will do.

Leadership requires skills development, mentoring, training, delegation, patience, and a whole host of other well thought-out actions that are over and above simply Bomba the Jungle Boy the day to day operations of the organization.
